What We Believe

Our Purpose

To glorify God and to further His kingdom on earth.

Our Mission Statement

First Baptist Church of Altus, Oklahoma seeks to be a Great Commission church by following the Great Commandment. We believe it is our responsibility to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) We also believe we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength as well as love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31)

Our Doctrines

We give cooperatively to the Southern Baptist Convention. Our church aligns with the doctrines outlined in

Baptist Faith & Message

What is Baptism?

Baptism is the act of fully immersing a believer in water. Baptism is not necessary for salvation, but it is necessary for obedience to Christ. It is symbolic of the re-birth and transformation a new Christian experiences, and it makes a public statement of accepting Jesus Christ. Baptism is limited to those who have made a personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord. Once you have made that commitment, we welcome you to come forward during an invitation and indicate your desire to participate in believer’s baptism.

How Do I Become a Christian?

Becoming a Christian is easy. There is no magic formula, and no specific prayer. 1Timothy 2:4 says that ”God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Acknowledge that you are a sinner. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” God, in his holiness, cannot look upon sin.

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” There is nothing you can do apart from believing in Jesus Christ that can restore your relationship with God.

Confess your sin to God and accept His forgiveness. Romans 10:9 tells us, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

You can pray something like this: “God, I confess that I have sinned and broken my relationship with You. I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, that he died on the cross and was raised from the dead to pay the penalty for my sin. With your help, I want to turn from my sin and accept the grace You are freely offering. Please show me what it means to walk with You.”

If you have prayed and accepted God’s forgiveness, He wants to bless your life and give you amazing peace and joy. The best way to experience the abundant life God has to offer is to spend time with Him through prayer and Bible study, and to spend time with other believers in a Bible-believing church.
